Frequently asked questions
Finding businesses
How do I search?
Type a business name, service or street into Search, and add a town if you like. Every results page opens as a list; press Map to see the same businesses on the map. Use Near me to sort by distance from where you are.
Can I describe what I need instead?
Yes. The search assistant understands requests like “a plumber in Leeds” or “coffee near BS1 5TR”.
What does “unclaimed” mean?
The listing was added from public information and the owner has not taken it over yet. Owners can claim it from the listing page.
Listing your business
Is it free?
Yes. A standard listing is free. You need an account with a confirmed email address.
Why isn't my listing showing?
Every new listing is checked before it appears. Most pass within minutes. If a check can't be completed straight away, a person reviews it. You can see the status in My account.
Why do I have to place a marker on the map?
It puts your business in the right place on our maps, and we use it to fill in your town and postcode, so every listing has a real UK address. Search for your postcode, tap your building, and drag the marker if it needs adjusting. You type the rest of the address yourself.
It says I need a UK internet connection
New listings can only be added from a connection in the UK. If you're using a VPN or a work network that routes through another country, turn it off and try again. If you're in the UK and still see the message, contact us.
Why was my listing not approved?
The reason is shown in your account. We don't list adult or sexual services, gambling, weapons, drugs or cannabis products, unlicensed lending, counterfeit goods or anything illegal (full list). Other common reasons are an address without a real UK postcode, a business based outside the UK, a description that is mostly keywords or links, or a duplicate of an existing listing. You can edit the listing and resubmit it within 30 days; after that, rejected listings are deleted.
Do website links help my search ranking?
Website links on UK Map Guide are marked so that search engines don't pass ranking from them. Listings created only for links are removed.
Featured and Premium
What do the upgrades do?
Featured highlights your listing and shows it near the top of search results: £5 for 30 days, £12 for 90 days, £45 for 12 months.
Premium includes everything in Featured, puts your listing first on its category and town pages, and adds it to Premium listings on the home page: £10 for 30 days, £25 for 90 days, £90 for 12 months.
When can I buy one?
Once your listing has been approved and is live. Go to My account and choose an upgrade under the listing. It starts as soon as the payment is confirmed. Buying again before it ends adds the new time on top.
Is it a subscription?
No. Each upgrade is a one-off payment. We email you a few days before it ends so you can decide whether to renew.
How do I pay?
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
