Wandering Through the Whimsy: A Weekend in the Cotswolds
29 May 2026
Join me as I uncover the hidden gems of the Cotswolds, where rolling hills meet charming villages. From cozy cafés to breathtaking views, this region stole my heart on a recent weekend getaway!
As I packed my bags for a weekend in the Cotswolds, I felt a buzz of excitement. Nestled in the heart of England, the Cotswolds promised a delightful escape into a fairytale landscape of honey-colored stone cottages and lush countryside. Knowing I’d be greeted by quaint villages and breathtaking landscapes made the journey feel all the more special.
We decided to kick off our adventure in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds". Its charming little river winding through the village created the perfect backdrop for an afternoon stroll. I could hardly resist the urge to snap a photo at the small stone bridges and the lush riverside. Just a tip: if you're there, don’t forget to stop by The Model Village — a miniature replication of Bourton; it's absolutely adorable and worth the £5 entry.
After taking some time to soak in the scenery, we treated ourselves to a lovely lunch at the bakery on the main street. The fresh-baked scones were heavenly! I opted for a classic cream tea, and I must say, the clotted cream combined with homemade strawberry jam made my taste buds dance. While enjoying our treats, we chatted with a couple of locals who eagerly shared their tips on the best spots to visit in the area.
Next up on our itinerary was a visit to the enchanting village of Chipping Campden. The historic market town captured my heart with its incredible architecture — the Market Hall, built in the 1620s, was particularly striking. We spent hours exploring the array of independent shops selling everything from antiques to artisanal crafts. And let me tell you, the handwoven textiles were simply stunning! If you’re a fan of local art, pop into the Court Barn Museum to learn about the Cotswold Arts and Crafts Movement.
With daylight waning, we decided to take a short hike along the Cotswold Way to soak up the golden sunset over rolling hills. The trail welcomed us with views that looked straight out of a painting. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for such a serene moment. And if you ever find yourself here: don't rush your walks; take the time to breathe in the fresh air and listen to the chorus of nature around you. It’s therapeutic!
As evening approached, we retreated to our cozy accommodation — a quaint bed and breakfast called Wayside Cottage. The warmth of the place felt like home, and our hosts were incredibly inviting. Over dinner, we exchanged stories with other guests at the communal table, sharing laughter and travel tales.
Our Sunday began with a hearty English breakfast that fueled us for the day’s adventures. We headed to the iconic village of Stow-on-the-Wold, known for its antique shops and vibrant market square. The weather was kind to us, casting a sunny glow on the streets. I could spend hours browsing through shops, but not before visiting the local pub for a proper Sunday roast! I found my favorite at The Old stocks Inn, with perfectly cooked meat and the kind of Yorkshire pudding that made my heart flutter.
Before we left, we made a brief stop at the beautiful village of Sidbury where we came across an enchanting stone church, St. John’s. The tranquility of the place was mesmerizing, and it felt like the perfect conclusion to our weekend getaway.
As we drove away from the Cotswolds, I looked back at the rolling hills and charming villages we'd visited. Each moment spent there felt like a page out of a storybook. This weekend wasn't just a trip; it was an adventure that left me feeling inspired and a little bit in love with the beauty of the English countryside. If you ever get the chance, I wholeheartedly recommend taking a weekend in the Cotswolds. You won't regret the memories you create there!
