Hidden Gems in Bath: Beyond the Roman Baths

Bath is so much more than its famous Roman Baths. Join me as I uncover charming streets, cozy cafes, and delightful experiences that make this city a must-visit!

I remember my first visit to Bath – I was drawn in by the allure of the Roman Baths, of course. But as I wandered the charming streets, I quickly realized that this city has layers far beyond its ancient ruins.

One chilly morning, I found myself strolling down Milsom Street, where I stumbled upon a delightful little shop called Alex and Ani. It was filled with unique, handcrafted jewelry that simply begged to be taken home. The shopkeeper was wonderfully friendly, sharing stories about the pieces and their origins. I left with a bracelet that sparkled in the light, a little piece of Bath I could carry with me.

Not far from there, I discovered the Thermae Bath Spa, where modern luxuries meet the age-old tradition of taking the waters. It was the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring. I dipped into the rooftop pool for a view that took my breath away: the hills of Bath sprawling before me, a hazy gold in the afternoon sun.

After some rejuvenation, a visit to Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House was a must. As I stepped inside, I felt like I had been transported back in time. The sweet scent of freshly baked buns filled the air as I savored a Sally Lunn bun with homemade strawberry jam. If you visit, don't miss their signature dish; it’s a sweet indulgence you won’t regret.

Walking off my lunch, I took a stroll to the picturesque Pulteney Bridge. I had seen countless photographs of it, but standing on the bridge, overlooking the flowing River Avon, was something special. I even spotted a few swans gliding gracefully along the water. It was a perfect spot to snap a quick photo and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

A little farther down is the enchanting Bath Abbey, which I initially thought was just a pretty building from the outside. Stepping inside, I was blown away by the stunning stained-glass windows and the intricate wooden ceiling. While you’re there, take a moment to sit in the pews; the quiet will wash over you, giving you a chance to just be.

As evening approached, the bustling atmosphere of the city took on a different hue. I ventured to the artisan quarter of Bath and stumbled upon The Circus Restaurant. If you're a fan of farm-to-table dining, this place will steal your heart. I indulged in a hearty seasonal dish; the flavors burst with freshness, and the ambience was cozy enough to make me feel completely at home.

Wandering through the streets at twilight, the soft glow of shopfronts lit the way. I discovered a quaint bookshop called Mr. B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. I lost track of time mulling over books, and it was the perfect way to end a night in such a literary city. I couldn’t resist picking up a few titles that caught my eye.

On my last day, I decided to take a walk through Kensington Meadows – a local favorite that often flies under the radar. Embracing the serene landscape made me realize just how lucky Bath residents are to have such a lush escape in their own backyard.

As I packed my bags, I felt a twinge of sadness to leave. Bath isn’t just about the Roman Baths; it's a tapestry woven from the threads of its local shops, delicious food, and friendly faces. I left with memories, a few treasures, and a heart full of warmth.

So, if you ever find yourself in Bath, don’t just gaze upon the Roman Baths. Discover the whispers of history in every corner, the flavors that fill your heart, and the stories waiting to unfold.
